The BREP Program and Pfizer Inc. Host Workshop for Science Teachers

The BREP program in collaboration with Pfizer Inc. organized a special workshop for science teachers focusing on the importance of incorporating the scientific method in the science classroom. The workshop entitled “Integrating Research into the Science Classroom” was held at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus on January 27, 2005.

Under the leadership of Ivy Medina and Margaret Anderson from Groton Laboratories at Pfizer Inc., 29 science teachers were able to participate in a series of innovative and practical hands-on experiments designed to demonstrate how research technologies can be integrated into the science classroom. The demonstration on how to extract and separate DNA using readily available household materials was especially well received by the teachers and highlighted as a practical and eye-opening experience. Other activities included a comprehensive review on how research applications are applied to the study of cancer and AIDS, an active discussion on the importance of promoting in the students a scientific approach to solving problems (inquiry approach), and a summary of science careers relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.

Teachers received a certificate of attendance and a copy of the second BioMed Battle Team comic
book from Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Principal Investigator of PR-BREP.

Dr. Emma Fernandez Repollet, Principal Investigator and Dr. Abe Schwartz, Co Investigator also participated in the activity. Dr. Schwartz provided a progress report of the activities that the BREP Program sponsored during 2004. As a special reward, all teachers received a copy of the second BioMed Battle Team comic book: "Cardiac Crisis", as well as a certificate of attendance to the workshop. The comic book is scheduled to be released during the month of February.
