Science Teacher Workshop: Principles of Green Chemistry
On March 5, 2007 The Pfizer Foundation in collaboration with Keystone Center for Education presented the workshop: The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. The BREP Program was the liaison in Puerto Rico for this activity. Fifteen teachers from various schools throughout the island participated in this activity.

Diabetes Center for Puerto Rico Celebrates its Third Anniversary
The BREP Program was invited to participate in the activities organized to celebrate the Third Anniversary of the Diabetes Center for Puerto Rico. One of the main activities was the presentation of the book: "Antología de Investigaciones del Centro de Diabetes para Puerto Rico", which includes the epidemiological and clinical studies conducted at the Center.

Second Puerto Rico Biotechnology Week
During the second celebration of the Biotechnology Week, the BREP program was awarded a special distinction for promoting the interest of K-12 students in science and technology. Principal Investigator, Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, accepted the award on behalf of the BREP Program. The Biotechnology Week is coordinated by the university-industry consortium INDUNIV.

On September 13th 2006, the BREP Program held as part the Teachers' Professional Development Program a workshop entitled "How to write a successful educational proposal?" Thirty teachers from various schools throughout Puerto Rico participated in the event.

Students were selected based on the recommendations of their science teachers. |

BREP's Director of Research Education Participated in the BSCS "Keys to Science" Workshops, Sponsored by the Pfizer Foundation
Mr. Felipe Padilla, Director of Research Education of the BREP program, was invited to attend the "Content Updates through Scientific Inquiry" and the "Molecular Biology and Biotechnology" workshops at the Keys to Science Institute of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) organization in Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Padilla's participation was sponsored by the Pfizer Foundation.

BREP Science Teachers Participate in the International Workshop "Microbes by the Sea ", sponsored by Pfizer Foundation
BREP science teachers, Ms. Evelyn Díaz Valdés from the Jesús T. Piñeiro School in Cidra and María J. Cruz Ocasio from the S. U. Ramón E. Betances School in Arecibo, were invited to participate in the workshop "Microbes by the Sea " held at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut in July, 2005. This international workshop was supported by the Pfizer Foundation.

Workshop on the Integration of Forensic Science in the Classroom
On August 20th, the BREP program held its second 2005 Professional Development activity, a workshop focusing on the integration of forensic science in the classroom. Twenty eight teachers from various schools throughout Puerto Rico participated in the event.

BREP PROGRAM IS HIGHLIGHTHED BY PUERTO RICO TV CHANNEL
The BREP Program received the visit of local journalist Ms. Charito Fraticelli, who prepared a special report of the program for Telemundo, Channel 2, TV Station. The story first aired on prime time, during the evening news segment, on Wednesday, June 14th, 2005 and has been repeated in several occasions.

BREP Program Sponsors its Third Summer Internship Activity
The third BREP Summer Internship Program was held during June 6-10, 2005 at the UPR, Medical Science Campus. Eighteen students and four teachers, from fifteen different middle schools from the Island, participated in the Internship.

The Elohim School of Caguas conducted an Art Fair during the month of November 2004; the fair theme was the Circulatory System.
Students presented art projects that included pictures, drawings, and sculptures of the circulatory system.

The BREP Program was invited to attend the first "Educational Alliances Congress" sponsored by Pfizer Pharmaceutical at the Embassy Suites in Dorado on August 3, 2004. More than 16 organizations were invited to attend this activity including: Alianza Corporativa Pro-Educación, Science on Wheels, AlACiMa, Sapientis, Fundación Comunitaria Puertorriqueña, Congreso de Líderes, Puerto Rico Libre de Drogas, APOS and Universidad Politécnica.

PRChem 2004 Recognized K-12 Science and Technology Initiatives
in Puerto Rico
The "Colegio de Quimicos de PR" in its annual conference and exhibition recognized three K-12 Science & Technologies Initiatives on the Island. The BREP program was invited to participate at the conference celebrated in the Westin Rio Mar during July 27-30, 2004. Thousands of chemists attended the conference giving us the opportunity to introduce our program to them.

The BREP program launched their BioMed Battle Team websites with a 3 days training given at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus during the month of July 2004. Participating at this training were 26 science teachers from 14 different Intermediate Schools from the Puerto Rico Department Education.

Mr. Felipe N. Padilla, BREP's Director of Research Education, was invited to participate in the Department of Education, Vega Baja District, Science Fair 2004. Students from 12 schools in the district ranging from Elementary to High School participated in the Science Fair.

The Biomedical Research Education Program (BREP) begins distribution and evaluation of their first BioMed Battle Team comic book at schools
Distribution of the first BioMed Battle Team comic book is in progress. Public and private schools have been contacted to serve as testing sites for this initiative. The first selected site was the Montessori School, "Escuela del Trabajor", were Ms. Marlin Sufron, Academic Affairs Officer gave us the opportunity to meet students at the school.

Mr. Felipe N. Padilla Álvarez joins the Biomedical Research Education Program as the new Director of Education in Investigation
Mr. Felipe N. Padilla Álvarez joins the Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program (PR-BREP) as the new Director of Research Education. Mr. Padilla was born in Ciales, P.R. and attended the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus were he completed a Bachelor in Sciences with a major in Biology.

First Summer Internship Program sponsored by the Biomedical Research Education Program
The BREP program conducted its first Summer Internship Program during June 19-26, 2003. Nine students and one teacher, from two different high schools, participated in the program which included visits to the research facilities supported by the RCMI Program at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus.

Dr. Emma Fernández Repollet, Principal Investigator and Dr. Abe Schwartz Co-Investigator of that Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program attended the annual director's meeting of the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Program held during February 20-22, 2003 in La Jolla, CA. The School of Medicine at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus received a Science Education Partnership Award from the National Center of Research Resources in January, 2003.

Dr. Emma Fernández Repollet, RCMI Program Director at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, received a Science Educational Partnership Award from the Division of Clinical Research at the National Center for Research Resources, NIH. Dr. Fernández-Repollet proposed to develop a Biomedical Research Education Program to improve the knowledge of Puerto Rican K-12 students about biomedical research focusing on diseases and disorders that disproportionately impact our population.
