The Biomedical Research Education Program (BREP) begins distribution and evaluation of their first BioMed Battle Team comic book at schools

Distribution of the first BioMed Battle Team comic book is in progress. Public and private schools have been contacted to serve as testing sites for this initiative. The first selected site was the Montessori School, "Escuela del Trabajor", were Ms. Marlin Sufron, Academic Affairs Officer gave us the opportunity to meet students at the school. Dr. Abe Schwartz, Co-Investigator of that Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program, Ms. Tania de la Torre, Administrative Assistant and Mr. Felipe Padilla, Director of Research Education met with students from 4th, 5th and 6th grade who participated in the testing of the comic book.

Mrs. Vanesa Mulero and Mrs. ángela González, teachers at the school introduced the comic book to the students. The students' response to the comic book was impressive. Comments about the contents, the characters, and the drawings were at the top of the list. Our heroes Dr. Upr, Manuel, Rita and Rick met the students' expectations.

BREP staff will continue visiting other schools in Puerto Rico to evaluate the response to the BioMed Battle Team comic book. The comic book will serve as the vehicle to help students understand and fight diseases, primarily those that most affect the Hispanic/Puerto Rican population. Design and preparation of the second comic book is in progress.
